How to Choose a Gaiwan: Size, Fit and Included Pieces
Start with three questions: how much tea do you want to brew, how will the bowl fit your hand, and which pieces are included? A motif can draw you to a gaiwan, but these practical details determine whether it suits your tea setup.

What is a gaiwan?
A gaiwan is a bowl with a lid used for brewing tea. Many designs also have a saucer. A description of a “three-piece gaiwan” can mean the bowl, lid and saucer; it does not necessarily mean three drinking vessels. A large supporting tray is another item and should be checked separately.
On Artisanoria, read “What is included” on the individual product page. A photograph may contain other pieces for styling or comparison. If a listing leaves an inclusion unclear, email support@artisanoria.com with its product number before ordering.
Compare capacity without relying on the photograph
A close-up photograph does not tell you how much a vessel holds. Use the listed volume in milliliters and US fluid ounces, and check whether the listing explains how that volume was measured. Leave room for the leaves and a comfortable fill level; your everyday brewing volume may be lower.
| Listed capacity | Approximate US fl oz | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 100 ml | 3.4 | A smaller listed volume; check the actual bowl dimensions. |
| 120 ml | 4.1 | 20 ml more than a 100 ml vessel, before allowing for leaves. |
| 130 ml | 4.4 | Compare handling as well as the extra capacity. |
| 150 ml | 5.1 | A larger listed volume does not by itself guarantee a wider rim. |
Conversions use approximately 29.57 ml per US fluid ounce and are rounded. These are size comparisons, not a promise that every size is available in the collection.
Check handling, lid fit and condition
Look through the gallery for the bowl profile, rim, lid and foot. A wide rim may look comfortable in a photograph, but hand size and grip differ. Where a dimension is not listed, ask for that measurement rather than estimating it from the image.
Read condition notes carefully. A note about lid alignment, glaze appearance or another detail belongs to that specific listing. Do not assume that two pieces with a similar name have identical dimensions or condition.
Practise the movement with cool water before using hot water. Keep your fingers clear of steam and hot surfaces, and place the vessel on a stable surface. A porcelain lid and bowl can become hot.
Compare actual listings
Scrolling Lotus Gaiwan lists an approximate capacity of 130 ml. Lotus & Eight Treasures Gaiwan lists approximately 120 ml and has a product-specific lid/bowl fit note to read. Compare the details and all included-piece information on the live listings; the difference in decoration is only one part of the choice.
Choose the motif after the form
A scrolling floral design can continue around the bowl, while a landscape may reveal different scenes as you turn it. Consider how the lid and body work together. The six motif stories offer ways to look more closely without assigning every modern design the same historical meaning.
